BEDFORD — A pick-six thrown by Abilene High quarterback Kallin Sipe just as the second half got underway proved to be too much to overcome as the Eagles lost their fourth-consecutive district game 34-16 to Euless Trinity ending the football season.

Just before halftime, the Eagles (5-5 overall, 2-4 District 3-6A) got within striking distance when Ray Mouloungi kicked a 24-yard field goal, cutting the Trojans lead to 21-9 at intermission. But when the Eagles received the ball to start the second half, Trinity defensive back Nigel Blount intercepted a pass intended for Eagles receiver Reese Pettijohn and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Trojans (7-1, 4-1) enough breathing room to cruise to their seventh win on the year.

In the first quarter, Theus dominated with four rushes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, helping Trinity jump out to an early 14-0 lead.

Trinity committed to running the ball, especially in the first half, as the Trojans picked up 11 first downs — nine of them coming on the ground. As a team, the Trojans had 22 carries for 190 yards, including 133 from Theus, who missed most of the second quarter with an injury before returning just before halftime.

Turning point: With less than five minutes left in the first quarter, the Eagles defense stopped the Trojans for the first time all night, however on the ensuing punt, the ball was muffed by return man Colton Wilson inside the Eagles 25-yard line. With the Trojans up 14-6, the Trinity offense wasted no time scoring in just three plays extending their lead to double figures at 21-6.

Player of the game: name, position, school – Brandon Theus, running back, Euless Trinity — the 215-pound senior played his last regular season home game like it meant something to him, rushing for 185 yards on just 11 carries adding three touchdowns. Coming into the game, the Eagles knew stopping Theus would be key to a victory, and the Eagles defense simply had no answer as he repeatedly broke would-be tackles.

Key stat: Trinity showed its dominance in the run game all night, running for 293 yards on 44 carries. The Trojans defense also helped out their offense plenty creating four turnovers in the game.

What this means: The Eagles now need Weatherford and North Richland Hills Richland to lose their finals game to guarantee themselves a playoff spot. For Trinity, the win means that the Trojans are now playoff bound as they'll likely end up with the second seed out of District 3-6A and play a team from the Arlington district in the first round.
