Euless Trinity has long been known for its running prowess. Through four games, this year’s Trojans team is no different. Trinity has gained 1,387 yards on the ground so far, leading to an average of nearly 350 yards per game. The formula, as it has in the past, has led to success for the 3-1 Trojans, which are averaging 44.5 points per game. Maybe the most impressive thing about this iteration of the Trojans power-run performance is the fact Trinity has been doing it without one of its best running backs. Last year, Junior Ollie Gordon burst on the scene as a sophomore for Trinity, finishing the year with 83 carries for 679 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was named district newcomer of the year. This offseason, he received multiple Power 5 scholarship offers and was named a three-star recruit, according to 247Sports. In the first game of the season Gordon showed why. The 6-foot-2 junior running back had 26 carries for 219 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-28 win over Arlington Lamar, a playoff rematch from the previous year. Gordon also had the game-winning touchdown catch. But Gordon hasn’t played since due to injury, which has allowed the Trojans to showcase their depth in the backfield. Like Gordon last year, Trinity sophomore Gary Maddox has also impressed early. He leads the team with 37 carries for 345 yards and five touchdowns. Quarterback Valentino Foni is second on the team in rushing with 35 carries for 303 yards. Donovan Brown and Damarion Dean also have over 100 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Trojans. In Trinity’s 59-0 win over Hurst L.D. Bell, the Trojans had 13 different ball carriers. Gordon is still third on the team in rushing despite only playing one game. When he returns, it could add another boost to a deep backfield. And good news for the Trojans: last week Gordon tweeted “I’m back and better.” Trinity will take on 3-1 North Crowley in a pivotal district matchup on Thursday.
