DALLAS
Euless Trinity’s Shamar Morton nearly blocked two punts against Sachse on Saturday. The senior defensive back knew if he got one more chance to block a kick, he’d get it.

With Sachse lining up for the go-ahead 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, Morton got through the line and blocked the attempt.

It resulted in a 43-yard turnaround as it took the ball from the Trinity 15 to the Sachse 43.

Seven plays later and Malcolm Washington punched in the eventual game-winning 11-yard touchdown and Trinity beat Sachse 20-14 in the finale of The Cotton Bowl Classic.

“I was close the first two times and on the third try I felt I was going to get it,” Morton said. “I got through and got a free release, and it changed the whole momentum of the game.”

The Mustangs (0-2) still had a chance to win after Trinity missed the extra point.

Sachse started the ensuing drive in Trinity territory and got down to the 33-yard line, but on second-and-10, the Trojans recorded their second interception thanks to linebacker Zion Fonua.

The Trojans ran the clock out and improved to 2-0.

“It was the classic find-a-way to win,” coach Chris Jensen said. “Sachse is a dang good football team – their coaching staff does a great job – and it was a good match-up.”

Washington’s TD was his second of the game. He scored on a 2-yard run with two minutes in the second quarter to put Trinity up 14-7 at the half.

Washington finished with 26 yards on eight carries.

“We know what we’re capable of and we just had to stay in it during the second half,” he said. “Our defense boosts up our confidence. We’re all in this together – it’s a team, not just one person.”

Sachse, which went 12-1 last year, led 7-0 midway through the first quarter after Anthony Beltran hit Trent Dean for a 2-yard TD. It capped off an 8-play 70-yard drive.

Trinity was forced to punt on a third-consecutive drive, but got good field position following Sachse’s fourth possession. The Mustangs mishandled a snap to the punter, who tried to run for a first down, but was stopped short.

Nine plays later and the Trojans tied the game on Laki Ellis’ 1-yard TD sneak with six minutes left before halftime. Sachse attempted to tie it before the break, but Trinity DB Soti Leota picked off a pass with less than a minute to play.

“It’s a big confidence booster and it gets us ready for the rest of the season so we can try to get to the playoffs and hopefully make it to state,” Morton said.

The Mustangs tied the score midway through the third on Beltran’s 50-yard pass on third-and-25 to Derrick Rose.

“Playing each other is going to pay off for the both us down the road in some big games,” Jensen said.

The Trojans, who host Colleyville Heritage 7 p.m. Friday, rushed for 95 yards on 29 carries and gained a total of 199 yards.
