The Weatherford Lady Roos rallied back late from a 5-0 first-inning deficit against the visiting Euless Trinity Lady Trojans Monday afternoon, but ultimately fell, 8-3. Euless Trinity’s offense was jumpstarted early by a line-drive double to left field for the game’s first run of the day. The Lady Trojans added four more runs in the first inning, thanks to a two-RBI single and errant throw at the plate by Weatherford. Lady Roos’ Head Coach Deborah Evans said pitcher Marlee Whitling came out a bit uneven, but did well settling in as the game wore on. “She struggled through that first inning,” Evans said. “After that, she pitched well and was pretty consistent.” The Lady Roos’ own offense struggled to find a rhythm early, as the team was kept off the scoreboard through the first four innings. However, Weatherford’s defensive play kept the team in the game, settling in following the Lady Trojans’ first-inning rally and limiting the latter to one run in the second inning and zero RBIs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Evans said Euless Trinity’s pitcher stymied Weatherford’s attack, while adding that the Lady Roos’ defense did well limiting the Lady Trojans’ scoring chances following the first inning. “As far as at the plate, [Euless Trinity’s pitcher] was throwing hard and we struggled to get our timing down,” Evans said. “Luckily, defensively we were able to knock them off the bases a little bit and take away some big hits. Our defense is pretty solid.” Despite Euless Trinity pitcher Mackenziw Lucin recording six strikeouts, Weatherford remained patient on the offensive end, finally catching a break on a sacrifice bunt which put runners on second and third base in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Roos got on the scoreboard the following play after a sacrifice single which brought both runners in scoring position home. Weatherford once again put runners on second and third base, this time in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a fly ball to right field from Whitling. The Lady Roos’ pitcher got a double out of the hit, while advancing another runner to third base with one out. A sacrifice fly on the next play gave the Lady Roos another RBI, brining the score to 6-3 before a caught pop fly and strikeout sent the team back out onto the field. Unfortunately, a line-drive to left field by Euless Trinity in the top of the seventh padded the team’s lead, 8-3, knocking in two RBIs before shutting down Weatherford’s offense in the bottom of the inning. Evans said solid base hits in open space like the one Euless Trinity recorded late are simply a part of the game. “You’re gonna get those,” Evans said. “That’s one thing we were trying to work with the kids.” The Lady Roos put up five hits on the day, with Morgan Skold and Brylee White pacing the offense, each going 2-of-3 at the plate. Whitling pitched a full game, striking out two. Weatherford plays the Abilene Lady Eagles in the former’s next district game at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the road. Evans said the Lady Roos’ upcoming opponent owns a strong bull pen, so Weatherford’s offense must be ready for a tough challenge. “They’ve got great pitching,” Evans said. “So we’re gonna have to get out here, get down the speed and really work on putting the bat on the ball.”
