The Weatherford Lady Roos avenged an 8-3 loss to the Euless Trinity Lady Trojans earlier in the season Tuesday evening on the road, taking the latter to 10 innings before winning, 11-10. After putting up two runs in the top of the first inning, Weatherford was held scoreless through the top of the fifth, while Euless Trinity steadily responded, scoring one run in the first, two runs in the third and another run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning, Weatherford needed a spark. The Lady Roos got it in the top of the sixth, rallying for six runs, kickstarted by a triple to left field by Morgan Skold. Teammate Hannah Reed subsequently knocked in Skold on a fly ball double to left field, before Lindsey Franklin tacked on another run for the Lady Roos on an RBI single to center field, tying the game at four. Weatherford’s Karley Horton later doubled in the inning, driving in the team’s fifth run of the day. The Lady Roos’ offense capped off the inning with a three-run homer to right field by Addison Tidwell, giving the team an 8-4 advantage. Weatherford Head Softball Coach Deborah Evans said her team did well battling back at the plate after a slow start. "The girls knew that we had [given] away some runs early on in the game and had popped up several times," Evans said. "In the sixth, they finally made some solid contact and put together several hits in a row, including a 3-run homer by Addison Tidwell." The Lady Trojans tacked on two runs in the bottom of the same inning, pulling with 8-6. Weatherford’s Hayden Holcomb extended the team’s lead once more in the top of the seventh, driving in Skold for a 9-6 lead. However, Euless Trinity refused to go quietly, rallying for another three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame and tying the game at nine in the process. Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings. Momentum swung in the Lady Roos’ favor once more in the top of the 10th, with Bella Garcia earning a triple to open the frame. Garcia scored two at bats later, as Euless Trinity made a throw to first base on a dropped third strike. Grace Thompson followed up with a two-out double to left field, before Skold drove the former in on a single to left field. Weatherford’s defense finished the job, earning back-to-back fly outs (while stranding two Euless Trinity runners on base) to preserve the win. Evans said the Lady Roos kept their composure from start to finish Tuesday, and it showed in the game's final inning. "The girls never lost confidence and stayed very positive throughout the game," Evans said. "The more times we faced their pitcher, the more successful we became at the plate. After taking a two-run lead in the 10th, Trinity came right back and had runners in scoring position. They managed to get one across the plate and had another at second with two outs. Their final batter pounded the ball to deep centerfield and Grace Thompson ran it down for the game winning catch." Whitling got the start on the mound, striking out three while allowing two hits. Horton took the field in relief in the third inning, collecting nine strikeouts of her own. The Lady Roos racked up 17 total hits, with Holcomb pacing the offense, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Weatherford hosts the Abilene Lady Eagles in a district game at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
