Euless Trinity baseball coach Will Averitt, in the midst of a playoff run, didn't consider the historical context. He admits he had no idea what the answer was, but after his team's regional quarterfinal sweep of Wolfforth Frenship this past weekend - as early as the drive back from Midland -- the question started getting asked: Is this the best season in Trojans baseball history? Averitt called former Trinity baseball coaches Gerald Turner and Steve Stone, now at Hebron, looking for the answer. They didn't know, either, but Turner made a suggestion. He told Averitt to head to the school's gym and check the banners. The best season, according to Averitt's banner search, was a 1994 regional quarterfinal appearance, a mark this team will eclipse this weekend with a regional semifinal series against Flower Mound, starting Thursday night at Globe Life Park. Averitt said they're still searching other avenues, just to make sure the banners are right. The elusive answer can be looked at as a representation of Trinity's history, and the significance of this season. Ask anyone at Trinity about the football team's playoff history and you'd probably get a lengthy lesson. Those banners -- including three state championships -- have their own place in the school's indoor facility. Historical knowledge for the baseball program, as Averitt's search proved, wasn't as readily available. That's what makes this Trinity season so meaningful and so unique. "We're really excited," Averitt said. "I know they're proud to hang a banner and come back and see it one day." Senior catcher Jimmy Crooks agrees, especially because he knows how difficult it can be to make the playoffs. He was on varsity as a freshman in 2016 when the team lost to Midlothian in the first round. He thought the next two teams were talented enough to make the postseason, too, but both fell short, setting up one last chance at making the playoffs. Before the season, once again, Crooks saw enough to make him believe this team could be special. That was the team's mindset internally. Externally, it wasn't shared. Texas High School Baseball's preseason outlook didn't have Trinity in District 3-6A's top four, meaning the Trojans weren't projected to make the playoffs. "We knew we were a better team than that," said senior pitcher Nick Canard. "We just had to come out and prove it." That took a while. Trinity started off the season 2-5. The Trojans would lose two of the next four, as well, including a 19-5 loss to Hebron. It was in those early season struggles that Averitt saw a reason for optimism, the thing he's most proud about this team even today. He saw his players continue to cheer for each other. No finger pointing with this group. "Everyone stays together when things are good," Averitt said, "but I'm more proud of them for staying together when we were struggling." One thing Averitt said he kept telling his team through the early season struggles was that eventually it would be worth it. He told them the same thing when they were traveling in the middle of the week to Abilene, Weatherford and San Angelo because of how stretched their district is.
