The Abilene High girls soccer team’s playoff hopes took a hit Tuesday night at Shotwell Stadium with a 6-1 loss to Euless Trinity.

Coming into the game, the Lady Eagles (13-12 overall, 3-7 in district with a shootout win and a shootout loss for 9 points) were six points behind Trinity and Richland High. Their result, combined with Richland defeating Weatherford 2-1, will leave fourth place out of reach.

"All of them have been close all the way around," AHS girls soccer coach Brent Camp said about District 3-6A. "There's not one game you walk into feeling like you'll leave with a win. It's going to be a fight each time. That's part of the fun, I'd like a few more to turn our way in the close ones, but happy with the young ladies' grit and determination."

The Lady Trojans (6-3 in district for 18 points) scored twice in the first six minutes and added two more in the final two minutes of the half, including one with 10 seconds to go to take a 4-1 lead into the break.

“When you give the ball away in bad spots, a good team punishes you for it," Camp said. "That's what Trinity did. We gave the ball away in really bad spots to lose it, and we paid the price for it. Proud of the girls fight and staying with it, but Trinity's a good team."

This year’s Lady Eagles are a young group that is going through the grind of a tough district schedule for the first time. All three players involved with the lone AHS goal are freshmen. Amaris Amaya led the charge down the right side before playing it in to Zoe Castro who laid it off for Justine Martinez for the goal.

Though playoffs aren't in the cards for Abilene High this season, it has been a learning process.

“There's some maturing in the soccer process and we're young in that process," Camp said. "A lot of the key roles are freshmen, sophomore. We're getting there, just still some growth to go in that area."

Trinity added to its lead seven minutes into the second half and finished off the scoring with 10:40 left in the game.
